How it works…
Every time a user searches on Google or a website using the Google API (Yamoogle) search results appear with sponsored results alongside them. When the searcher clicks on one of these sponsored results, the advertiser pays Google a variable amount of money dependant on how many other people are bidding for that space etc. Google normally keeps all of this money to itself however, if an affiliate (us) is using their search engine API on their website then Google gives a share of its revenue to that website (a bit like a referral fee really).
Using statistics from Nielsen, the carbon trust and other respected research organisations, Yamoogle figured that the average web user would offset 18.56 tonnes of carbon in a year if he/she used Yamoogle as their sole search engine.
The maths
Average user search volume = 43 per month (Nielsen). Average clicks on sponsored links = 1/5). Therefore average sponsored links clicked per user per month = 43 = 8.6. 1/5 Average revenue per click = $.90. Average revenue generated per user per year = ($.90 x 8.6) x 12 = $92.88. Average amount of carbon produced per person per year = 10 tonnes. Cost of offsetting 1 tonne of carbon = $5.
Tonnage of carbon offset per yer using yamoogle =
$92.88
=
18.56 tonnes.
